The final pavers of Mirvac’s newest commercial tower in Sydney have been laid, giving the public a first true look at the completed entrance of 8 Chifley.

The new building is set to be a new focal point of the Sydney CBD, combining distinctive contemporary design, adaptable workspaces, leading sustainability features and generous civic space.

Designed specifically for its prominent north-facing site, 8 Chifley is bounded by Elizabeth, Hunter and Phillip Streets, and features a highly transparent façade, heightened ceilings and legible structures. This ensures the building enjoys open and unobstructed outlooks, as well as a sense of extensive space and light within.

Key features of the 34-storey building include a side core and connected office spaces, with seven vertical villages providing connectivity and vertical integration between the floors, adding to the feeling of expansive space throughout the premises.

A six-story open space with a suspended glass foyer at street level also provides a grand entrance to the building and creates a new area of public space which addresses and completes Chifley Square.

“The open space is repeated midway up the building [18th floor] and again at the top, integrating Australia’s outdoor lifestyle into the city environment,” says Senior Partner Ed Lippmann of Lippmann Partnership, who has collaborated with UK architectural firm Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners on this project.

Coming together to create a highly efficient and innovative workplace, both firms believe that the building should be designed to add a splash of colour to Sydney’s professional district, while reflecting and embodying a unique Australian business culture.

“The design, whilst internationally significant, is very specific to the climate and culture of Sydney. The result is a beautiful piece of architecture that enhances the public realm while providing occupants with wonderful internal spaces within which to develop working communities,” says Ivan Harbour, Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners.

8 Chifley has achieved a 6 Star Green Star Office Design v2 certified rating and is committed to achieving a 5 Star NABERS Energy Rating.

QBE Insurance Group has signed a 10-year agreement to lease approximately 2,800sqm of the building, which is jointly owned by Mirvac and Keppel REIT. Law firm Corrs Chambers Westgarth has also leased over 8,000sqm of space, representing approximately 42% of the building’s net lettable area of 19,000sqm for a 12-year term.

Mirvac has also announced that construction on the building will be completed ahead of schedule in August.
