Australia has all but swept the floor at the first American Architecture Prize (AAP), winning two-out-of-three of the program’s top awards.
The jury of the global awards program has taken a particular liking to recent projects from Melbourne’s McBride Charles Ryan and Sydney’s Turf Design Studio, handing each of the Australian firms an Architect of the Year award alongside global architecture powerhouse, Gensler.
McBride Charles Ryan took out the Interior Design of the Year along with a whole host of other category prizes for its Penleigh and Essendon Grammar Senior School project, while Turf scored the Landscape Architecture of the Year and one other category prize for its Sydney Park Water Re-Use Project.
American-born firm, Gensler took the Architecture of the Year award for its Shanghai Tower, the now global practice adding to its long list of accolades which includes design award wins in nearly every of the 46 locations it has bases in.
There were also several other Australian developments that placed across the 41 categories. These included CplusC Architectural Workshop’s Alexandria Residence, Dulwich Hill Residence and Canada Bay Residence, and another Turf Design Studio project, Kensington Street.
The three Architects of the Year will receive the AAP Trophy at the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, New York on October 25.
