Fielders Steel Roofing supplied aluminium roof sheeting from their ARAMAX FreeSpan range to build the undulating roof at the White Bay Cruise Terminal in Sydney.
Designed by Johnson Pilton Walker with AW Edwards as the builder, the multi-award winning White Bay Cruise Terminal located in Sydney’s Balmain district is an important international and domestic gateway to New South Wales. Completed in early 2013, the $57-million world-class facility was built to accommodate the expected surge in the Australian cruising market to almost one million passengers by the year 2020.
Fielders was contracted by architects Johnson Pilton Walker and builder AW Edwards to provide the unique V-shaped ARAMAX FreeSpan roofing material for the undulating roof of the cruise terminal. The roof would also serve as the internal ceiling within the terminal building.
Fielders’ ARAMAX FreeSpan was selected by the architects due to the material’s flexibility to provide the complex wave form along with a unique, expressive V-shaped aesthetic. By delivering an integrated roofing and ceiling solution along with long spanning capabilities, ARAMAX FreeSpan fit the project brief perfectly.
The aluminium roofing material was ideal for the installation, given White Bay’s close proximity to the ocean. By providing a corrosion resistant solution, the aluminium roofing would stand up to the elements for years to come.
The ARAMAX FreeSpan roofing material was rolled onsite at White Bay using the Fielders Mobile Mill, a mobile roll-former, which allows the aluminium sheeting to be rolled onsite anywhere in the world, reducing construction time, saving costs and improving project efficiencies.
Fielders supplied 8096m² of 1.2mm aluminium roof sheeting; 3975m² of 1.2mm aluminium perforated ceiling sheeting; and 52.4 metre sheet lengths rolled on site.
Since its completion in 2013, the building has won an array of coveted awards including ‘Transport Winner’ at the 2013 World Architecture Festival in Singapore, and the Harry Seidler Award for Commercial Architecture at the 2014 Australian Architecture Awards.
