Bennett Constructions is a well credentialed family business with over 75 years of building experience servicing public and private clients in and around the northern rivers region of NSW. Bennett Constructions began discussions with Futurewood in early February 2016 regarding the decking that was required as part of the major building works that they were undertaking at the Emmanuel Anglican College in Ballina.
Futurewood solid composite decking was chosen as the preferred decking material on the large deck/walkway that connected a new junior classroom with other components of the major building upgrade.
The project involved over 400 sqm of Futurewood CleverDeck solid composite timber decking, fixings and EnviroSlat screening.
Futurewood worked closely with Bennet Constructions to identify any potential project savings and make sure that all products could be supplied in line with the project plan that had been developed for the build.
The deck design ran around 3 sides of one of the school classrooms and incorporated a walkway as well as the main deck area. The nature of the design presented a few potential problems and could have meant a great deal of product waste. After reviewing the deck design it was decided to offer some custom made composite timber boards that Futurewood had made especially for the project and produced in quick time to meet with the project time line.
Futurewood worked hand in hand with Bennett Constructions throughout the process to make sure that the composite timber decking was manufactured and delivered within the agreed timeline. This enabled the project to be completed as planned.
The chosen decking was Futurewood 138mm x 23mm x 5400mm long and 3600mm long solid composite timber decking and some EnviroSlat 70mm x 15mm x 5400mm long screening slats in the colour Chocolate. The low maintenance characteristics of the Futurewood decking and cladding material was a great choice for the costal environment that the school is situated in and the hard wearing requirements that the students will place on it. Being a solid composite timber product with the colour running right through the material maintenance is kept to a minimum with no annual coatings required as would be the case with traditional timber decking. Concealed fixing of the composite timber decking also eliminates the need for face fix screwing or nailing and reduces the risk of a student being injured on a protruding nail or screw that might be the case with timber decking.
