Metropolitan Caloundra Surf Life Saving supporters club known as Mets on Kings offers a restaurant and bar among other facilities close to the picturesque Kings Beach. The building needed renovation and help from the community to raise the funds required.
Futurewood’s composite timber building products were chosen for this project as they offered the best value for the decorative cladding and decking components of the surf club refurbishment.
Stage 1 of the renovation was completed in October 2015 and transformed the look of the club building with plenty of positive comments regarding the new building façade from both local residents and club members. A combination of Futurewood EnviroSlat 70mm x 15mm and 40mm x 30mm solid composite timber screening slats in the colour Saltbush were used on the façade to produce a truly stunning building transformation.
Stage 2 of the renovation involved installing an outside area featuring a relaxing shaded deck, public funding was required in order to complete this stage of the project and a crowd funding plan was put in place. Several months later the “Members Deck crowd funding project” had successfully raised the necessary capital and the new deck was completed in late 2016 and opened just before Christmas. The successful “Buy a Board” crowd funding campaign encouraged the public to buy between 1 and 4 decking boards and have an “honour plaque” fixed to those decking boards as recognition for their donation along with a 10-year membership of the club.
Club members and the public alike have taken to the new “Members Deck” which has provided a wonderfully relaxed extension to the facility.
From the deck there are fantastic views of the ocean and the positioning provides the necessary afternoon shade as patrons wind down after a busy day of beach activities. The photos do not quite do justice to the peaceful and relaxing atmosphere that the new decking area has created for the club.
The deck was constructed using Futurewood composite timber decking 138mm x 23mm x 5.4-metre solid decking boards in the Saltbush colour that matches the façade. Futurewood CleverDeck is a solid, hard wearing decking material that requires very little maintenance and is not affected by the salt, sand, and moisture that a deck this close to the beach will be subjected to. A traditional timber deck requires ongoing maintenance in order to survive in such an environment. The cost of maintaining a timber deck would be prohibitive for the surf club when that money can be better-used buying equipment and training life savers.
The building process proved that Futurewood composite decking was very easy to install and the concealed fix clips plus the use of the breaker boards enhanced the overall deck design and reduced the installation time as well as minimising costly offcuts.
