Project background

Bridge 22, located South of Rangiora is one of KiwiRail’s bridges on the national network.

KiwiRail plays a critical role in New Zealand’s freight and supply chain industries. To ensure safety is maintained and their assets are up to standard, KiwiRail regularly inspects their tracks and structures, and carries out preventative maintenance and repairs over the rail network.

Bridge 22 was one of the many bridges that lacked a compliant walkway. The bridge required handrails for the safety of inspectors and maintenance staff working on the bridge; however, there was no walkway on the bridge to mount these handrails.

Why was Moddex selected?

Moddex worked with KiwiRail and the University of Canterbury to develop a cantilevered walkway and handrail system that could be easily retrofitted onto the bridge.

Named KlipTread, this fully compliant, pre-engineered system was a game-changer. With no need for specialist trades, scaffolding or hot works on site, the installation was easier, faster and at a lower ongoing cost than previous custom engineered walkway solutions.

With a type approval certificate, our client KiwiRail could put their trust in the Moddex KlipTread system. The unique design utilises ultra-strong, corrosion-resistant, galvanised steel, meaning it can withstand even the most severe vibrations from the rail bridge.
