A total of 31 projects have been shortlisted for the 2017 Intergrain Timber Vision Awards, an annual event which recognises visionary use of timber in the built environment.
Projects are awarded across five building categories, including Commercial Exterior, Commercial Interior, Residential Exterior, Residential Interior and Landscape. The shortlist has been selected from a longlist of 158 entries.
Among the shortlisted projects is East Sydney Early Learning Centre (ESELC) by Andrew Burges Architects, a childcare centre in the inner-city suburb of Darlinghurst that was reimagined as a ‘mini-city’. Over the three floors of the facility, circulation space is conceived as a network of streets and laneways. Gardens and playgrounds incorporated within the project are similar to the green spaces found in broader urban spaces. A sandpit takes place of a central plaza, and yellow pipes stand exposed in the centre’s ceiling. ESELC has been shortlisted for Commercial Exterior and Commercial Interior.
Another shortlisted project is Jac by Panovscott Architects. This project in the Sydney suburb of Dulwich Hill saw a rear addition to a 1907-built house, centred around a tree. The architects decided on the name ‘Jac’ as a reference to the 116-year-old jacaranda tree that sits on the site, and which was incorporated into the new build. The home recently won the House in a Heritage Context award at the 2017 Houses Awards. It has been shortlisted in the Residential Exterior category of the 2017 Intergrain Timber Vision Awards.
Other projects include Centenary Theatre, Taronga Zoo by TKD Architects, North Bondi Amenities by Sam Crawford Architects in collaboration with Lymesmith, Brae Restaurant Accommodation by Six Degrees Architects, and Henry Street House by Eugene Cheah Architecture.
The winners of the 2017 Intergrain Timber Vision Awards will be announced at an event in Melbourne on 21 September 2017.
