It was a successful year for adaptive reuse in Australia’s most southern state with the Australian Institute of Architects handing out the majority of the 2015 Tasmanian Architecture Awards to projects involving the adaptations of existing buildings.
Two residential adaptations of historical sites took out the Heritage and Residential Architecture – Houses (Alterations and Additions) categories at the awards held at Huon Valley on Saturday 27 June, while a reconfigured fish and chips and a redevelopment of an old press hall won the Peter Willmott Award for Small Project Architecture and a Commercial Architecture Award respectively.
Projects that “have enriched communities and reinvigorated public spaces” were also awarded by the AIA with Brooke Street Pier by Circa Morris-Nunn picking up an Award in the Commercial Architecture category and Morrison & Breytenbach Architects taking home three awards, one for Moonah Arts Centre and two for their Ptunarra Child and Family Centre project.
All projects that received an award will continue on to the National Awards to be announced in November.
