Landscape Design - Sustainability Awards finalists 2015
Festival of Landscape Architecture to open on 10 October
Planning Institute Australia (PIA) have announced five category winners and seven commendations for the 2015 Australia Award for Urban Design.
The awards recognise excellence and innovation in all elements of urban design in Australia and includes four category prizes ranging in scope from urban design policies and frameworks to large-scale delivered outcomes.
This year’s two “Delivered Outcome” prizes went to a Hassell, Fitzpatrick + Partners & Brookfield collaboration in Perth, which won the Large Scale award, and a Port Adelaide Renewal project by Aspect Studios, Mulloway Studio & Renewal SA, which was awarded the Delivered Outcome – Small Scale prize.
Designed by Hassell and Fitzpatrick + Partners, Brookfield Place project involved the transformation of a city block that had been vacant and unused for 30 years into a mixed use development, integrating disparate spaces into a cohesive, welcoming and engaging public realm.
The project also involved restoration and incorporation of heritage elements and was applauded by the PIA for its accessibility and its deep connection to adjacent areas and sites.
Aspect Studios and Mulloway Studio were responsible for the design of $2 million Hart’s Mill Project, a precinct redevelopment that focuses on the conservation and re-establishment of spaces as an active part of Port Adelaid and the broader metropolitan area.
The revitalisation encompasses three overlapping projects, including the redevelopment of spaces around the old mill buildings and the wharf to provide a range of public and event spaces.
The PIA were pleased with Aspect and Mulloway Studio’s approach to accommodating and celebrating the industrial setting and see it as a yardstick project for future development in the area.
“This creative re-use of industrial site that celebrates heritage, is respectful of its industrial setting and incorporates a diversity of uses, re-using existing materials on site to create a variety of spaces,” reads the PIA media release.
“Its innovative approach to open space design is a catalyst for future development, creating the framework for future development as well as redefining perceptions and experience of the area.”
Other prizes included the Policies, Programs & Concepts – Large Scale award which was jointly won by a prototype web-based tool and future smartphone App that provides detailed, personalised assessments of potential housing choices, and The Sunshine Coast Light Rail (SCLR) project by Sunshine Coast Council and Hassell.
The Policies, Programs & Concepts – Small Scale award was won by the team behind the Victoria Quay Enabling Precinct Plans which includes CODA, Fremantle Ports, Allerding & Associates and Creating Communities.
