Sydney City Council has lodged a development application for the “seismic stiffening” of Paddington Town Hall.

The Council is proposing to protect the building’s iconic clock tower from damage from seismic tremors, although the building has not experienced an earthquake in its 119-year history.

The work is proposed under a $2 million refurbishment of Paddington Town Hall and the Chauvel Theatre, which would include the replacement of corrugated roofs, repairs to the façade, painting, planting and rainwater recycling.

The theatre’s interior would also be repaired and repainted and roof insulation installed.

Paddington Town Hall was completed in 1891 in a Municipal Renaissance style and exhibits typical Victorian grandeur.

The Clock Tower was completed in 1905 with an inscribed clock face that commemorates the coronation of King Edward VII.
