AAMI Park Stadium, Melbourne, has received the “World’s Most Iconic and Culturally Significant Stadium” Award at the Stadium World Congress 2012 in Doha.
Cox Architecture and Arup were the architects and engineers for the development of the ground breaking stadium.
The stadium has won a host of awards since it was completed in 2010.
“We are honoured to have designed this world breaking stadium that not only was recognised in Victoria as the recipient of the Victorian Architecture Medal in 2011 but has now been recognised internationally as an exemplar stadium,” said Patrick Ness, design director of Cox Architecture.
The 31,000 seat venue has become a landmark for all sporting fans in Melbourne and has become home to the Melbourne Storm, Melbourne Heart and the Melbourne Victory.
The designers say its unique design means it has become the latest world stadium icon showing how these buildings can be culturally significant places to the communities they serve.
With offices in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Canberra and Adelaide Cox Architecture are Australia’s leading Sports Architects and are currently designing Adelaide Oval redevelopment, Perth Rectangular Stadium redevelopment, renovation of the Southern Stand at the MCG, Manuka Oval in Canberra and the new Northern Stand at the SCG.
