A Brisbane studio has exhibited artwork featuring joinery, light fittings, furniture, jewellery and art creations, all handmade by its staff and directors.

BASE Architecture showed off its wares to local businesses and industry colleagues at an exhibition to showcase the firm’s own design creations this week.

Director, Shawn Godwin, said the evening was a strong success and they received a very positive public response.

“It was great opportunity for staff to take off their ‘architect’ hats for a night and display their “out of hours” creations which they are equally passionate about,” Godwin said.

“We realised internally that as creators we all seem to have a keen interest in various areas of design and we encourage our staff to realise their additional talents outside of the workplace to assist in creative development.”

Godwin encouraged other design firms to replicate the idea and said individual design projects had strong benefits, such as promoting professional and personal development for staff, as well as providing staff an outlet to reduce stress.

“We see architecture as a life choice, so it’s critical that we foster that mentality as part of our organisational culture,” Godwin said.

The event has triggered questions as to whether the studio is laying the foundations to develop a product line.

“The event has really proven to us that there is significant interest and scope for BASE to consider a future product line, and it’s certainly an opportunity to diversify our firm which we’ll consider in the next 18 months,” Godwin said.
