World-renowned architect, Frank Gehry, will develop a concept design for a landmark building in Sydney.

The University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) today announced Gehry will design a concept for the new Faculty of Business building as part of its UTS Campus Master Plan.

“We sought out Frank Gehry because his work so brilliantly reflects the nexus between creativity and technology that embodies the innovative thinking so characteristic of UTS,” said Professor Ross Milbourne, vice-chancellor and president of UTS.

The building will create a world-class teaching and research environment that inspires creative thinking and encourages collaboration, UTS said.

Gehry, whose works include the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao (pictured) and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles (USA), is in Sydney to continue discussions initiated by the University in October.

“This once in a lifetime opportunity offers the University a chance to build something extraordinary as part of our Campus Master Plan,” Professor Milbourne said.

“It demonstrates our commitment to deliver the best possible learning, teaching and research experience for UTS students and staff.”

Sydney will learn if it is to be home to Australia’s very own Gehry building some time next year.

Gehry was elected to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects (A.I.A.) in 1974, and he has received many A.I.A. awards, including A.I.A. Los Angeles Chapter Gold Medal.

Gehry is also a recipient of The Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1989. Awarded annually (since 1979), the Prize is conferred upon a living architect whose built work demonstrates a combination of talent, vision and commitment, and has produced consistent and significant contributions to humanity and the built environment through the art of architecture.
