A private collection of 23 works by the world’s most famous street artist will be exhibited in Sydney throughout November at Outpost Project street art festival on Cockatoo Island.
It will be the first time the Oi You! Collection - which includes the Banksy works — has been seen outside New Zealand. Altogether it contains more than 70 rare and original pieces by the world’s leading street artists.
The Oi You! Collection will be in Sydney as part of Outpost Project, a free street art festival on Cockatoo Island running from November 4 to December 11. Presented by the
Sydney Harbour Federation Trust, Outpost Project, Art from the Streets will feature more than 100 local and international artists and artists’ collectives, making it the biggest street art festival in the Southern Hemisphere.
“This will be the first time so many works by Banksy have ever been seen in Australia,” said Sydney Harbour Federation Trust Executive Director Geoff Bailey. And the exhibition will be free.
“People are fascinated by Banksy’s art and by his identity, which has never been revealed. This is a private collection, showcasing an art movement that has become a global phenomenon.”
Other works in the Oi You! collection are by leading international street artists including Faile, Swoon, Micallef and Os Gemeos.
Outpost Project will feature the grand final of Skateboarding Australia’s 2011 Pro/Am tour, educational programs, art-making projects, live art, pop up bars, DJs, tours and family activities.
Because of its dynamic nature, the art in Outpost Project will change during the festival, giving visitors different things to see across the five weeks.
“While Cockatoo Island’s vast industrial buildings and alleyways are a perfect backdrop to host a street art festival, the Trust is also developing a broader line up of cultural events for the island in 2012,” Bailey said.
