Architecture firm Buchan Group has revealed the $5 million plans for Surfers Paradise's Stage 1 of The Mark Shopping Centre, with construction now underway on the refurbishment project.

The project will include a new arcade linking Orchid Avenue to the Soul Surfers Paradise development, delivering the final stage of the long-awaited ‘River to Beach’ pedestrian link in Surfers Paradise.

The Buchan Group has been appointed by Hachma International to manage the architecture, interior design and graphics for the 750sqm project, scheduled for completion in late 2012.

The design firm’s director Brett Saville said that the refurbishment would deliver a modern and exciting retail space.

“The existing building is about 35 years old and the development criteria for retail buildings have changed significantly since then,” Saville said.

“The floor to floor heights are lower than ideal and the structural grid is not uniform, which presented us with a significant design challenge.

“The newly-introduced enhanced access provisions required detailed work to allow the new arcade to link Orchid Avenue to Soul, as the floor levels are significantly different.”

Saville said that the finished product would complement the existing buildings and enhance the shopping experience of customers.

“The existing glass skylight at the eastern end of the arcade is being expanded to ensure that natural light floods into the space.

“The finishes are contemporary and eclectic, spanning a colour palette that is sympathetic to the existing finishes while creating an internal ambience that is reflective of the Gold Coast.”

Hachma International Property Manager Trevor Park said that the refurbishment of The Mark was a significant milestone in Surfers Paradise’s renewal.

“This refurbishment project has been in the pipeline for some time, and we are committed to delivering a product that sets the standard for future development in the area,” Mr Park said.

“We are delighted to be working with The Buchan Group to bring The Mark Shopping Centre back to life for shoppers to enjoy the new space in time for Christmas.”
