Approximately 60 architects, urban designers and planners met on May 1 to workshop ideas and scenarios for the future of central Geelong as part of the Vision 2 project with the idea of a 'Federation Square' meeting place discussed
The workshop resulted in draft scenarios with sketches to be displayed at the Vision 2 gallery at Deakin University.Vision2 gallery in Geelong
Deakin's University Head of the School of Architecture Professor, Hisham Elkadi told the Geelong Advertiser that the workshop was a way for looking at ways the city can be improved.
"What we are trying to do is say 'sure, you are doing a great job in Geelong but just to think in a slightly different way'," he said.
"So instead of looking at the city as a problem, we look at it as an opportunity ... with this workshop we are looking at what is the ultimate we can do here."
Elkadi said the large open area in front of Geelong Railway Station was an example of somewhere people could gather rather than be a bus stop.
Mayor of Geelong Cr John Mitchell said that Vision 2 would examine the development opportunites for central Geelong over the next two decades.
"In effect Vision 2 is about creating a forward plan for central Geelong that guides the city's development over a 20 year time frame," he said.
The exhibition at Vision2 gallery is open Friday and Saturday.
