Sydney's heritage listed Majestic Theatre has been renovated and is now a residential, retail precinct designed Hill Thalis Architecture and Urban Projects, constructed and project managed by Growthbuilt with developer Trinium.
The project began with a total of eight different floorplans for 27 individual apartments; however because of the decorative features and fittings and the unusual shape of the building, each apartment ended up being completely unique.
Growthbuilt's Project Manager, Colin Rahim said:
“One apartment has a window shade made of the original corrugated iron Majestic Theatre sign, another has a walk-in robe with beautiful carved architraves, a third has a hidden loft with extra storage space and another has a balcony that has been cut-into the sloped façade of the building.
The building was originally constructed in 1921 and has had a variety of uses since that time including housing a skating rink and club.
Rahim said that adapting the theatre to modern uses whilst maintaining the original look of the building was one of the most difficult aspects of the project.
“To ensure the building remained loyal to its architectural history, but still relevant to the context of its surrounds, we painstakingly revived the original architraves, brickwork and signage, incorporating them into the final structure — giving another meaning altogether to ‘adaptive re-use’!”
