A small western Sydney school has been named the best new public building in NSW at the Australian Institute of Architects 2009 Architecture Awards.
All Saints Primary School, by Candalepas Associates, won the 2009 Sulman Award for its institutional design tailored towards children and families.
NSW Architecture Awards Jury Chairman, Sam Marshall, told last night’s awards ceremony the project offers “moments of delight” and has “already taken its place in the heart of the community”.
The school was one of three education facilities acknowledge at this year’s public building awards.
University of Sydney’s Faculty of Law, Library and Teaching complex by Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp received an award for sustainable design and was highly commended for its excellence in urban design.
John Wardle Architects was also acknowledged for its use of innovative design in the Jane Foss Russell Building at the University of Sydney.
A record 200 architectural projects were entered in this year’s awards, ranging from toilet blocks to multi-million-dollar public buildings.
All winners are now in the running for the Australian Institute of Architects 2009 National Architecture Awards, which will be announced in Melbourne in late October.
