Architect Gerald Melling, former editor of the New Zealand Architecture magazine, has passed away.

New Zealand news website Stuff.co.nz reported he died at home with his family in Wellington on December 22.

Melling was born in Liverpool in 1943 and moved to New Zealand in the 1960s.

He has worked around the world, most notably in New York and Toronto.

Following the Boxing Day Tsunami in 2004, Melling designed almost 50 houses and a community centre in Sri Lanka. He eventually penned a book titled Tsunami Box about the experience.

With fellow architect, Allan Morse, Melling Morse Architects formed in 1990. Together the pair worked on the redevelopment of Left Bank Arcade in Wellington, Auckland’s Butterfly Creek and Melling’s own home in central Wellington, The Skybox.
