The development of a new NSW Transport and Infrastructure agency is being welcomed by the industry for its potential to fast-track approvals processes and kick start new urban developments.
Urban Taskforce chief executive, Aaron Gadiel, said the new agency might streamline approvals processes and minimise red tape for developments on major roads or railways.
The new department, which is yet to be finalised, will combine the policy and planning functions of seven existing government agencies to a single department.
Under the current system, approvals are required from a number of road and rail authorities before developments near major road and rail corridors are given the green light.
“The amalgamated department could be a very positive step for developers by minimising approvals times and creating a more efficient system,” Gadiel told Architecture & Design.
While a single department could make it easier for businesses to sign off on development issues, Gadiel said it would only be successful if decision making is integrated to avoid conflicting interests between departments.
“The new department won’t deliver efficiencies unless it provides a one-stop-shop for agencies,” he said.
He claims the department is more likely to succeed if a central group is authorised to deal with applicants on the same issues to minimise red tape.
“[This move] is a step in the right direction that has the potential to deliver a range of benefits to the industry,” he said.
The amalgamated department is currently being finalised, with more details to be released in the coming weeks.
