Queensland architects have been tagged the “great undiscovered talent” of the world’s design arena by an international architecture critic.
Debra Pickrel, one of the world’s leading US-based critics, said she was “mightily impressed” by the depth and talent of expertise she encountered whilst visiting a string of Queensland architectural highlights earlier this month.
“A great deal of thinking has gone into buildings to enhance the community in Queensland and individual architects are making some astounding impacts,” she said.
Pickrel said Queensland’s “exceptional” use of natural materials and adaptability of inside-outside living could provide Queensland architects with a range of exciting opportunities.
“The talent of Queensland architects could well translate to projects in Florida, the US and Hawaii and be well suited to places in variable conditions much like Queensland,” she said.
Pickrel visited projects in Brisbane, Cairns and Townsville during her stay and attended events to promote Queensland architecture on a world stage.
“Brisbane is a city engaged in possibilities. It’s embracing its future through planning, design and engagement with community to bring about a pleasing environment,” she said.
Pickrel predicts design in Brisbane will hit centre stage in coming years as precincts begin to merge into a “cohesive whole” in the city centre.
