The University of Technology, Sydney, (UTS) has revealed a shortlist of five from its national design competition to extend the podiums of two buildings at its Broadway site.
DesignInc, Hames Sharley, Johnson Pilton Walker, Lacoste + Stevenson with Daryl Jackson Robin Dyke, and Tonkin Zulaikha Greer, now have until 15 February to complete their stage two submissions, and will be paid $40,000 for their participation. The results of stage two will be announced in mid April.
The designs must “creatively interpret” the masterplan created by BVN Architecture, while paying attention to the two buildings’ roles as the formal entrance to the campus and new frontage to Broadway.
The concepts will include teaching spaces, retail space and student services shopfronts, as well as a campus entry, small cinema, library, and 600-seat lecture theatre. The proposal must achieve at least a 4 Star Green Star rating.
As an example of the Brutalist architecture, the existing UTS building was designed by Michael Dysart then of the NSW Department of Public Works with a structural expressionism appropriate for the engineering students it was originally built for.
The architects’ proposals must retain the architectural integrity of the existing structure and finishes, including lifts core, columns, beams, precast concrete ceilings, brick walls and granite flooring.
