The kind of alleyway usually avoided at night will be instead lit up with art and activity this Tuesday 16 February.
The city’s Temperance Lane will feature a pop-up gallery in place of the usual collection of garbage bins that line its curb.
“As a group of artists living in the inner city, we want to provide a template for the kind of cultural activity that could be replicated in laneways around the city, ” artist and curator, Mark Titmarsh, said.
“By producing art in these dark and empty locations, we make the spaces more available for people to use the small bars and restaurants in the area and less accessible to illegal graffiti and tagging,” he said.
Live painting, art, sculpture, media facades and interactive digital works will revamp the lane between 6-9pm.
The resident drinking hole, Grasshopper Bar, will also sponsor the night, providing food and free refreshments to celebrate the occasion.
“At the moment these shadow zones in Sydney are being wasted when really they could be used as significant meeting places in the city.
“We hope this is a step towards opening up the city and giving local art a new platform for display, rather than the street’s petty crime,” Titmarsh said.
In Temperance: Pop Up Gallery is an initiative of the UTS Designing Out Crime Research Centre. Featured in the gallery are works by Deb and Bridge, artists from ICAN Gallery, Peloton Gallery, MOP Projects, UTS’s Visual Communication Lecturer, Mark Titmarsh, Urban Media Studio and Interactivation Studio.
The initiative is supported by the City of Sydney Council.
