Internet giant Google has added a new application to its collection, that’s perfect for budding architects.

Google Building Maker, is a new online tool for creating buildings for Google Earth, that’s aiming to make Google Earth (pictured) the most comprehensive 3D atlas in the world.

Described as a cross between Google Maps and a bin of building blocks, Google Building Maker allows users to create a building and construct a model in 3D, by using aerial photos and simple 3D shapes, which are supplied by the application.

Once finished, Google will look at the model and if it looks right, and if a better model doesn't already exist, they will add it to the 3D Buildings layer in Google Earth, through the Google 3D Warehouse (a giant, online repository of 3D models).

There are currently 50 cities on Google Earth where Google Building Maker can be used, with more cities to be added in the future.

To use Google Building Maker, users’ must first sign into their Google account and have the latest edition of Google Earth on their computer. Users can use Google SketchUp (a general-purpose 3D modeling tool) to edit or otherwise modify anything you make with Building Maker.

Building Maker is free and available in 14 languages.
