Brookfield Multiplex will construct the Johnson Pilton Walker designed refurbishment of a heritage listed building in Martin Place for the new Macquarie Group headquarters.

The refurbishment will aim to modernise the building services and systems and will include an upgrade to workspaces, inclusion of high ceilings, chilled beams and raised access floors as well as terraces.

The new workspace will also have a central atrium to the core of the building topped with a new steel-frame glass dome to enable natural light to filter through all levels.

Internal stairways will be constructed to provide greater interconnectivity and a new all-glass lift is to be integrated with the existing heritage marble facades.

The project is targeting a 6 Star Green Star Design and As-Built rating.

David Ghannoum, regional managing director, New South Wales at Brookfield Multiplex said that the collaboration with the Macquarie Group’s Banking and Financial Services Group on the One Shelley Street in 2009 has set up positive groundwork for the newest project.

“Macquarie told us they want an iconic workplace that provides connection and flexibility for staff, while preserving the heritage elements of the building. We are dedicated to working with them to achieve that vision," said Ghannoum.

Macquarie Group head of business services, Will Walker said:

“We are delighted to appoint Brookfield Multiplex to the team working with us to reinvigorate a building that is an important part of Australia’s financial services heritage. Our goal is to provide a flexible, connected and sustainable workplace for the benefit of our staff and clients.”

The heritage-listed building was constructed between 1925 and 1928 and is an Australian example of the American influenced Inter-War Beaux-Arts style.

Ground-floor tenant, the Commonwealth Bank, will continue to operate its branch and safe custody offices while works are undertaken.

Early construction works have already commenced with completion predicted by the end of July, 2014.
