Cities and the Built Environment Minister appointed to industry applause
AIA welcomes new minister and highlights three priorities
The NSW Department of Planning and Environment has appointed Gary White of MacroPlan Dimasi as the Department’s new Chief Planner.
White held various Local and State Government senior planning roles in Queensland for more than 30 years before entering the private sector in 2012 where he became Chief Planner and Strategic Advisor for MacroPlan Dimasi.
He has been called upon by NSW Planning to provide rigour and oversight of strategic planning for the State and assessment of major projects.
A spokesperson for the Planning Department says the appointment of a Chief Planner was recognition of their central role in setting a course for the future of cities and regional communities.
“White will provide expert oversight on an ambitious program of work as we deliver on the goals and priorities set by the Premier,” says the spokesperson.
“As Chief Planner, Mr White will oversee projects to make the planning system more efficient and to get the best outcomes for local communities as we plan for the communities of tomorrow.
“Mr White will be a tremendous asset for the Department in helping us achieve these important goals for NSW.”
Macroplan CEO Michael Tilt says White’s appointment is fair recognition of his experience and knowledge, and that he’ll provide a healthy focus to practical planning for the state.
“We are excited for Gary in his new role,” Tilt says.
“It is fair recognition of the experience that he has accumulated in 35 years of practice in planning. His knowledge is broad, exemplified by the many national projects he has worked on during his time with Macroplan.”
“Gary’s return to the public sector provides for a healthy focus on practical planning. Insights gained at Macroplan of the relationship between desired planning outcomes and how they are delivered by the market will no doubt be key.”
White holds a Bachelor in Regional Town Planning (UQ) and Postgraduate Diploma Business Administration (QUT) and is a Life Fellow of the Planning Institute of Australia and Corporate Member of the Property Council of Australia.
He will commence with the Department on 9 November this year.
