Traditionally, building design was greatly restricted by the surrounding natural conditions. With the implementation of mechanical systems, buildings can now operate regardless of climate, opening a host of building options. However, with the onset of global warming and the recognition of the impact that mechanical systems have on the environment, the need for a return to optimised passive design has come to the fore. This is not to reject mechanical systems outright, but rather to encourage cooperation between old and new building techniques and understanding.
