Located in the Campbelltown region of Sydney’s Southwest, the GenesisCare Integrated Cancer & Health Centre required Team2 Architects and Erilyan to design and construct the $54M cancer care centre and research hub with energy efficiency, sustainability, and functionality at the forefront of their decision-making process.
Targeting a 6-star Green Star rating, the use of materials throughout the project was critical to the design outcome. This ranged from the project’s external skin, which provides solar shading while maximising views of the nearby facilities, to the wet areas in the interior spaces that use compact laminate to achieve durable surfaces that require minimal maintenance and utilise sustainable manufacturing practices.
Zack Ashby, Director at Team2 Architects noted that the performance of the materials and the building as a whole was a key priority of the project design.
“The building was designed entirely around its performance,” said Ashby.
Designed to provide advanced cancer care and research services to the Southwest Sydney and Southern Highlands regions, the cancer centre will offer medical oncology, radiation oncology, and access to clinical trials.
The facility fills a crucial need in the local community, which was a sentiment that was echoed by the esteemed speakers at the grand opening. In attendance were Health Minister, the Hon. Ryan Park MP, Greg Warren MP Member for Campbeltown, Mayor of Campbelltown Dr George Greiss, Alex Belcastro from Northwest Health REIT, and Chief Medical Officer at GenesisCare, Dr Marie Burke OAM.
“This facility demonstrates the balance between architectural excellence and high-quality service provision, and the realisation of this project is proof of what can be achieved through a strong partnership”, said Dr Greiss.
With a recognised focus on sustainability that includes third party certification, waste reduction initiatives, and stewardship programs that repurpose compact laminate after their lengthy service life, the Erilyan team contacted Duracube to initiate the end-to-end wet area support process.
Demonstrating the ability to identify potential challenges whilst they exist on paper and providing solutions, Duracube was contracted across several applications. These included toilet and shower partitions, lockers with engraved numbering and combination locks, shoe box benches with slat tops, and ironing board cupboards.
“It was great to be involved in a project where we could demonstrate Duracube’s flexibility in design and practicality throughout the project. There were a few design changes along the way,” said Duracube Sales Executive, Ben Ross.
“You could tell Erilyan’s project team were passionate about getting a quality job done for their client, as were we.”
The advantages of having utilised compact laminate in the range of applications within this project will serve the cancer care centre and research hub for a long period of time. With an indestructible core, compact laminate is both strong and durable, whilst being waterproof and impact-resistant.
Importantly in this healthcare setting, compact laminate is extremely easy to clean, as being impervious to water allows hosing and wiping with a damp cloth, without the risk of swelling or deterioration.
Durasafe compact laminate is an antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal surface, which makes for an ideal surface in health applications.
