Take a peek inside the Kenilworth Residence, an impressive recently completed home, which features an elegantly designed circular staircase, located adjacent to the main entrance, making a real statement as you enter into the home.
Positioned in front of a large set of windows, the extensive use of glass in the design of the staircase’s railing and treads allows natural light to penetrate deep into the room, without obstruction.
An elegant ‘almost all glass’ circular staircase
The staircase railing is made of Glasshape’s signature TemperShield low iron, bent and toughened 12mm glass and has a relatively tight bend radius of 700mm. Similarly, the stair treads are made of triple SGP laminated low iron glass with a combined thickness of 39mm, and which also have a digitally printed ceramic ink edge band on the underside of each tread to conceal their fixing interface with the steel structure of the staircase.
Glasshape was honoured to work in collaboration with IronWood Connection, initially providing Digital Field Measuring services utilising the latest laser scanning technology to capture the as-built staircase structure and surrounding built environment. The point cloud data obtained from the field measure was then used to computer model the staircase in reverse 3D and design the bent glass railings and laminated stair treads to fit in preparation for manufacture.
The finished result is a reflection of the combined effort and attention to detail from everyone involved in this complex and beautifully executed project.
“After reviewing the Kenilworth project, I knew I would be working with Glasshape again to complete it. This is one of the most challenging projects that we have done, and Derek Spoel was very helpful in finding solutions to keep it moving forward. He was able to answer any and all questions we had as we were progressing through the project. The pricing was very competitive given the complexity, and we were able to keep it to a reasonable level to win the job. Once they finished production of the glass, we were able to track it as it arrived on time to our location. Regardless of the size of the project they are my go-to for bent glass. With the quality of the glass and customer service, they make it very difficult to consider anyone else,” Estevan DeLeon, Field Estimator – Design & Build Specialist at IronWood Connection, said.
