Molmic, a local Melbourne manufacturer of high-end, handcrafted upholstered furniture, has officially opened its new showroom at 363 Johnston Street in Abbotsford.
The new space will showcase the latest collections in a beautifully curated space, designed with architects and designers in mind. Embodying the craftsmanship and commitment to Australian manufacturing for which Molmic is renowned, the showroom is a centrepiece for Australian-made, sustainable furniture.
The official launch event transformed the space into a pop-up celebration with guests from Melbourne’s architect and design (A&D) community enjoying the brand-new Abbotsford showroom, which serves as a testament to Molmic's commitment to Australian manufacturing.
Dedicated to quality, sustainability, and the rich heritage of local craftsmanship, Molmic remains a family-owned operation, offering bespoke furniture that is made-to-order in their Melbourne factory.
Founded by Molly and Michael McMahon in 1987, Molmic’s family-centric approach to business has enabled Molly’s four children to become integral to company operations, with each bringing their own expertise and passion to different facets of the business.
Her son, Anthony Paterra, General Manager of Molmic, shares his mother’s passion for furniture design.
“Molly’s background in children’s clothing might seem unrelated to furniture design, but it gave her a deep understanding of fabrics, craftsmanship, and attention to detail,” he explains. “All of which translated seamlessly into the world of furniture.”
“Her bold decision to focus on producing high-quality, locally made furniture resonated deeply with the values of Australian craftsmanship and sustainability.”
From design, production and marketing to customer relations, the family collectively contributes to the brand’s success. The company's founders and the second-generation leaders are now working to steer the business into the future.
“Our strong family involvement ensures that the original vision of quality, durability, and local craftsmanship is preserved and enhanced. Regarded as heirloom pieces due to their enduring quality,” Anthony continues.
“With a commitment to quality, combined with a deep connection to Australian values, craftsmanship, and family, we have all – family and staff – made Molmic a beloved brand Australia wide.”
With its team of 60 skilled craftsmen, many of whom have been with the company since its inception, Molmic is upholding the legacy of fine furniture making. It also minimises its environmental impact by keeping production local.
Built with high-end materials and constructed with care, Molmic sofas are designed to last for generations by prioritising durability and timeless design.
“Molmic has always stood for quality over quantity and is intended to be passed down through generations. Our focus is on creating timeless pieces that will last for decades, all while supporting local manufacturing. This new showroom represents not only our past but also the exciting future of Molmic as we continue to innovate and inspire.”
Catering to both retail and A&D markets across Australia, the showroom provides the design community access to more than 20 bespoke models in a convenient location.
“We are upholding a legacy of handcrafted furniture and through our Molmic commitment to building furniture in Australia,” concludes Anthony.
