Polished concrete floors from Transitions Polishing and Grinding were
installed at the new IGA supermarket in Newtown Shopping Centre, Toowomba as
part of a modern fitout project.
The IGA supermarket, which opened its doors in late 2013, features Transitions
polished concrete floors throughout the main trading areas and epoxy coating in
the deli and back of house areas. IGA’s retail space was located in a 50-year-old
tenancy that had seen multiple tenants over the years. IGA revitalised the
store space bringing it up to date with a modern fitout, while preserving many
of the historical features of the building including the concrete floors.
The client’s brief specified a number of aesthetic and performance
related objectives for the supermarket’s chosen flooring solution. In addition
to utilising the existing slab installed in the building some 50 years ago, the
concrete floor was required to have a gloss finish to increase light
reflectivity and introduce brightness in the store by bouncing light from the
building’s high bay windows around the supermarket, creating a lighter and
cheerful environment for shoppers.
From a functional perspective, the client sought a concrete floor that would
be durable, have a long lifespan and be easy to maintain in line with the
supermarket’s current cleaning program. The polished concrete flooring would
also need to withstand a high amount of foot and trolley traffic on a constant
basis.
The Transitions polished concrete floor installed at the Newtown IGA
supermarket in Toowoomba was a great success, meeting all of the client’s
objectives.
