Architecture & Design: Why do you think you were honoured for your entry?

We believe our project was recognised because it showcases how sustainability can be integrated into design without compromising on functionality or character. By reimagining a heritage-listed building with a strong focus on adaptive reuse, recycled materials, and passive environmental strategies, the project struck a balance between honouring the past and designing for the future. It’s a practical example of how sustainable principles can create inviting and adaptable spaces that resonate with the community.

What did your entry add to the body of knowledge of sustainable design?

Our entry added to sustainable design by demonstrating how circular construction principles can be effectively applied in a commercial setting. By focusing on reusing materials, such as reclaimed timber and recycled steel, and integrating biophilic and passive design features, we provided a clear and replicable model for others. The project showed that sustainability doesn’t have to be complex or costly—it’s about smart planning and making the most of what’s already there.

Has your entry influenced the way you will design buildings in the future?

Definitely. This project reinforced the importance of careful material selection, thorough early-stage planning, and a deep respect for both site and context. It’s shown us the potential of reusing and repurposing materials creatively, and how even simple changes can make a big impact on a building’s sustainability. Moving forward, we’ll continue to focus on designs that are flexible, environmentally thoughtful, and built to last.
