The judges were impressed with the way AECOM’s design philosophy was adopted by BVN to apply a communal rather than territorial approach to space design and allocation.
The jury comments: “The design achieves a high level of visual connectivity via the void staircase design, thereby aligning with the client’s ‘one AECOM’ philosophy, whilst still providing discreet task specific spaces.”
The design success was attributed to communication being delivered from the production through to the end users. This was done with ‘GO! Workshops’ being held to discuss how the company would implement their Green Office Policy to ensure everyone reached a common goal.
The design team focused holistically on supporting the initiatives of the client’s policy, as well as applying sustainable building methods and materials to best practice, in an effort to avoid a tick box approach to Green Star.
Materials used within the workplace were sourced from renewable and ecologically sound suppliers wherever possible. Director of BVN Architecture Angie McKay says it was an honour to win the award, highlighting their innovative sustainable implementation.
“The worm farms were certainly something we had never done in a commercial fit-out before,” says McKay. “An aspect we’re really proud of is that all the timber we’ve used in the fit-out was 100 per cent post-consumer recycled. So, all the timber has had a previous life, so that was pretty fantastic,” she says.
