Studio Carlo Ratti Associati unveils bold Olympic torch design

More than just a symbol of the Games, the new torch is a striking piece of Italian design, created to reflect innovation, sustainability, and the spirit of sport.

Presenting the torch were four iconic athletes: Olympic gold medallist and final torchbearer of Torino 2006, Stefania Belmondo, and Paralympic fencing champion Bebe Vio in Milan, joined by Paralympic gold medallist Martina Caironi and Olympic figure skating bronze medallist Carolina Kostner in Osaka.

Named Essential, the torch was designed by Carlo Ratti Associati, developed by Eni (Premium Partner of Milano Cortina 2026) in collaboration with Versalis (Eni), and engineered by the Cavagna Group. Its minimalist design puts the flame front and centre, balancing clean aesthetics with cutting-edge technology.

Two versions of the torch have been created – one for the Olympic Games, one for the Paralympics – both sharing an elegant, reflective finish that changes with the light.

The Olympic torch glows in blue-green shades inspired by Italy’s ever-changing skies (Shades of Sky), while the Paralympic torch radiates in bronze tones, symbolising resilience and strength (Mountains of Light).

What sets Essential apart is its open design – a first in Olympic torch history – revealing the inner workings of the flame. It’s an invitation for people to witness the technology behind the magic.

Built entirely in Italy, the torch weighs just over a kilogram (without fuel) and is made from a recycled aluminium and brass alloy. Sustainability was a key design principle: the torch can be refuelled and reused up to ten times, cutting down on waste during the relay.

Powering the flame is bio-LPG, produced at the Enilive biorefinery in Gela, Sicily, using renewable materials like used cooking oil and agricultural by-products. Even the grip incorporates eco-conscious materials – made with XL EXTRALIGHT, an ultra-light polymer containing 60% bio-naphtha from renewable sources.

The torch’s iridescent finish is created using Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD) – a high-tech process that gives it a shimmering effect and allows it to blend with its surroundings, creating a unique visual experience for torchbearers and spectators alike.

The Essential torches will be on display at the Italia Pavilion throughout Expo 2025 in Osaka and at the Triennale di Milano from May 2025 until the end of the Milano Cortina 2026 Games. After the Games, the Olympic torch will be added to the collection at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne.
