Embedding equity into design decisions with Equity by Design
Developed by the Champions of Change Architecture Group, and developed by the Coalition’s Architecture Group (AJC, SJB, Cox Architecture, Billard Leece Partnership and Hassell), Equity by Design represents a collective effort to ensure spaces are safe, accessible and empowering for all.
Developed by the Champions of Change Architecture Group, Equity by Design provides a structured approach to embedding equity into design decisions.
Anchored to the Coalition’s 7 Switches framework, the resource helps design and decision-makers to challenge traditional norms, systematically check for bias, and integrate perspectives of equity, diversity, and inclusion at every stage of project development.
Design is a critical tool for ensuring equality, accessibility, sustainability, and community resilience are built into the future from the outset, according to a new resource from Champions of Change Coalition.
With population growth to be supported by significant infrastructure investments, including a $213 billion five-year major public infrastructure pipeline, Australia has a unique opportunity to intentionally shape a more inclusive built environment that it enables all people to thrive.
Equity by Design is all about providing a structured approach to embedding equity into all design decisions and development processes.
By applying the 7 Switches lens as an integral part of project design considerations, this approach moves beyond legislative standards, demonstrating how the built environment can be shaped to truly serve all communities.
Case studies in the resource, covering major sports stadiums, health facilities and community, transport and housing hubs, show how these standards can be used to enhance accessibility, safety, and a sense of belonging for all.
Equity by Design provides practical guidance for integrating gender equality, accessibility, culture, and wellbeing into every phase of design, including:
- Practical actions for embedding equity into the earliest stages of project planning and design development, shaping design visions and priorities that respond to the needs of diverse communities.
- Detailed case studies demonstrating how thoughtful design fosters dignity and creates environments that address the nuanced needs of often underrepresented populations, including women, Indigenous communities and people with disabilities.
- A spotlight on using the 7 Switches in the design of safe public urban spaces and equitable, gender- and body-diverse public bathrooms.
- A literature review bringing together leading frameworks and resources on embedding gender-aware and equitable design principles into the built environment.
Equity by Design supports a fundamental shift in mindset, using inclusive design to create spaces that genuinely reflect the diversity of our communities and ensure everyone can participate fully and equitably in their environment.
