Green Star is Australia’s leading and most trusted sustainability rating system for homes, buildings, and communities. A Green Star Home meets the high standards set by the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) and is assessed against three key criteria essential for the future: positive, healthy, and resilient.
This initiative isn’t just about meeting market demand; it marks a step-change for the industry in terms of advancing sustainable design and construction practices and building capacity to help drive uptake in the residential sector.

The Green Star Homes certification outlines specific requirements a home must meet. A positive home is fully electric, energy-efficient, draught-sealed, and powered by renewable energy. A healthy home is well-ventilated, comfortable, and constructed with low or non-toxic materials to support occupant well-being. A resilient home is water-efficient and designed to withstand the impacts of climate change.
This standard drives demand for sustainable housing by providing third-party certification that verifies these attributes. The GBCA, a globally recognised authority, is committed to advancing sustainability by supporting industries, governments, and individuals in making impactful changes.
Homes seeking Green Star certification undergo two verification stages: Green Star Designed, which evaluates the home during the design phase, and Green Star Certified, which confirms compliance after construction. This certification provides a trusted benchmark for sustainability, ensuring homes are built for a better future.
