Koos de Keijzer, Principal at DKO, has long been a leading voice in Australian architecture, shaping the residential landscape with a distinctive design philosophy. Recently recognised as a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects (FRAIA), he reflects on this milestone, his journey from the Netherlands to Australia, and the evolution of DKO.
In this interview, he shares insights on sustainability, the future of architecture, and the role of innovation in creating enduring and meaningful spaces.
Architecture & Design: What does being named a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects mean to you personally and professionally?
Koos de Keijzer: Being a migrant to Australia, having studied in the Netherlands, it’s nice being acknowledged by the architectural community here. Professionally Dutch architecture is very residentially focused and it’s nice that I run a residentially focused practice here.
Reflecting on your journey, what were the most pivotal moments that shaped your career and DKO’s growth?
I think when I realised that architects could improve our world and create a more sustainable future.
How has the architectural landscape changed since you founded DKO, and how has the firm adapted to these changes?
I think that all elements of architecture have become more specialised but I still think architecture is one of the last ‘generalist’ professions. You need to know a little about everything.
What are some of the most rewarding projects you have worked on throughout your career, and why do they stand out?
I think the Melburnian on St Kilda Road in Melbourne and Arkadia in Alexandria in Sydney. Both projects are timeless and case studies for residential architecture.
How do you see the role of architecture evolving in the next decade, particularly in Australia?
I think architects have a lot of the answers in how to make a sustainable social and physical future. I’m certainly passionate about leaving a better and more holistic environment.
What advice would you give to young architects aspiring to make a lasting impact in the field?
It’s a wonderful rewarding profession and let your passion drive where you want to go.
Sustainability is a growing focus in architecture - how does DKO integrate sustainable practices into its projects?
Creating sustainable outcomes is at front and centre of our working methodologies. We live in a country that has a fabulous sunny climate, I feel strongly about zero carbon and practical sustainability. In our processes we start with the planform which drives 90% of sustainable outcomes.
What are some of the biggest challenges currently facing the architectural industry, and how can they be addressed?
AI is a really interesting challenge that as a practice we have embraced. Our methodologies are often driven by optioneering, and AI is of huge assistance with this.
How do you balance creative innovation with the practical demands of modern architecture?
A lot of architecture is about conversations, clients and other stakeholders are essential to creating great outcomes.
What’s next for DKO and for you personally - are there any exciting projects or ambitions on the horizon?
We have a large presence in South East Asia which is growing. How residential densities are dealt with in Ho Chi Minh City, Bangkok and Jakarta is something we can learn from. Currently DKO are designing five large hotels – this is really exciting.
