Curvy capabilities of Austral Plywood add a touch of cool to school

Architects dwp|suters recently made use of Austral Plywood to create curved walls and maintain a feeling of calm simplicity at the Meditation and Indigenous Cultural Centre at Bentleigh Secondary College.

Hoop Pine A Grade 12mm thick plywood was used throughout the internal space. Its flexibility enabled the architects to create and construct the dynamic curved walls.

The golden coloured plywood harmonises well with the soft, warm colourings of the blackbutt flooring, while it will eventually contrast with the external hardwood cladding, which will mature and silver over time.

Constructed predominantly from renewable timber, the building acts as a piece of furniture amongst the forest landscape. It is something to be sat in, on and around while students learn about the environment, indigenous culture and mindfulness meditation.

With a warm, uniform space, the centre has a calming effect on the students who use it.
