Moddex Bikesafe® bikeway barriers

Bikesafe barriers keep cyclists and pedestrians safe on Lake Conjola shared pathway

Central to this project are Moddex Bikesafe® bikeway barriers, which provide durable safety solutions designed for easy installation and low maintenance. Modular and pre-engineered, they provide a robust, reliable barrier that integrates easily into the natural and built environment.

Moddex’s Bikesafe® bikeway barriers are an integral part of a new shared path at the Lake Conjola Entrance Road in New South Wales.

The Shoalhaven City Council has upgraded the shared pathway between Conjola Park and Lake Conjola, replacing an aging footbridge and improving safety for cyclists and pedestrians. The project has created a more accessible and reliable route for users, bringing greater mobility, reduced traffic congestion, lower emissions and a more active lifestyle.

Central to this project are Moddex Bikesafe® bikeway barriers, which provide durable safety solutions designed for easy installation and low maintenance. Modular and pre-engineered, they provide a robust, reliable barrier that integrates easily into the natural and built environment.

Safer access to enjoy the surroundings

The new pathway includes 74 metres of path to the west and 55 metres to the east, with the 11-metre steel truss bridge in the centre, spanning the Pattimores Lagoon waterway. To ensure durability and compliance, the Council specified Moddex’s pre-engineered Bikesafe® bikeway barrier for the concrete paths, with a Moddex handrail connected to the steel bridge to maintain a continuous safety rail.

For the bridge itself, contractors JNC Welding and Fabrication developed a method to fix the Bikesafe® BS45 top rail directly to the bridge structure. This showed the adaptability of the Moddex system, allowing for a secure, streamlined installation, and enhancing the bridge’s safety features.

Smart safety with Bikesafe®

Bikesafe® is a modular system, featuring a top rail, handrail and balustrade infill to provide strong, reliable protection for cyclists and pedestrians. Designed with safety in mind, the offset top rail is positioned at arm height to prevent cyclists from getting their handlebars tangled in the barrier, helping to reduce any risk of injury.

Thanks to its modular design, the system was installed swiftly and efficiently, meeting all compliance requirements. The streamlined design of Bikesafe® fits easily into the natural surroundings. The curved sections were customised to align with the curves of the cycleway, creating a safer and more user-friendly experience. The Bikesafe® barriers and steel bridge are left in their natural galvanised finish for durability and for a neutral grey colour that blends with their surroundings and requires little maintenance.

The new pathway and bridge have made a significant difference to pedestrian and bike movement, greatly enhancing accessibility and safety between Lake Conjola and the main road. With smart engineering and high-quality safety solutions, the community now enjoys a modern, compliant and easy-to-use access way.
