Small Sustainable Practice

In today's architecture and design landscape, sustainability is no longer a niche consideration; it's the driving force. Architects and designers are tasked with creating spaces that are not only beautiful and functional but also help minimise environmental impact and contribute to a healthier planet. This shift has demanded greater transparency and accountability from building product manufacturers, a challenge most have risen to with gusto. Enter Knauf Gypsum, a leading global supplier of plasterboard and building materials in Australia, with a suite of certifications that stand as a testament to their commitment to sustainable practices.

But why are certifications important? For the building industry, they provide a crucial framework for navigating the complex world of sustainable materials. Sustainability certifications act as independent validations, ensuring that products meet the highest standards of environmental performance and social responsibility. They offer tangible evidence of a manufacturer's dedication to reducing their environmental footprint, minimising carbon emissions, conserving vital resources, and, importantly, fostering healthier built environments.

For architects and designers, certifications are an invaluable tool. They streamline the selection process by allowing them to easily identify and support responsible businesses with a proven track record of sustainable practices. This helps foster trust with clients who are increasingly demanding eco-conscious solutions. Moreover, certifications provide much-needed transparency, offering architects and designers the peace of mind when wanting to specify products aligned with their own sustainability goals.

However, it's important to remember that not all certifications are created equal. "Greenwashing" – the practice of misleading consumers about a product's true environmental impact – is widespread in the construction industry, as in many other industries worldwide. Therefore, it's crucial to seek out certifications with a robust framework, based on independent evaluations. Here, we'll delve into some of the key certifications Knauf holds, showcasing their commitment to a sustainable future.

GECA

Global Ecolabelling Network (GEN) member, GECA is the leading certification body for environmentally responsible products and services in Australia; and Knauf boasts the GECA EcoLabel on a range of their plasterboard products. For architects and designers, this signifies that the specified Knauf board has met stringent environmental criteria throughout its life cycle, from raw material extraction and manufacturing to use and disposal.

GECA certification goes beyond just environmental considerations. It also addresses social responsibility factors within the supply chain, ensuring responsible sourcing and ethical labour practices throughout the product's journey. This holistic approach aligns perfectly with the evolving demands of the industry, seeking to create buildings that are not only environmentally responsible but also contribute to a more just and equitable world.

Global GreenTag

Global GreenTag is another key certification that Knauf proudly holds. This program takes a life cycle approach, rigorously evaluating products based on environmental, health, and social impact. This, in turn, provides valuable insights into a product's performance across a range of metrics, including embodied energy, water consumption, and volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.

Global GreenTag also delves into the social responsibility aspects of a product, ensuring compliance with ethical labour practices and responsible sourcing. This integrated approach gives architects and designers the confidence they need to specify Knauf products that not only minimise environmental impact but also contribute to a healthier built environment for occupants.

Product Aware

Beyond established certification programs, Knauf recognises the need for readily available information on the environmental and social impact of their products. With this in mind, they have partnered with Product Aware, an Australian initiative that uses a standardised rating system to provide the industry with quick and transparent access to a product's environmental performance data.

Product Aware assigns a score based on a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), allowing architects and designers to easily assess the embodied energy and environmental impact of various Knauf products, and make informed decisions about their material selections, aligning with a project's overall sustainability goals.

Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs)

EPDs provide architects and designers with in-depth, third-party verified data on a product's environmental impact throughout its life cycle. Knauf readily provides EPDs for their core plasterboard products, offering detailed information on factors such as raw material acquisition, energy consumption during production, transportation emissions, and potential for end-of-life recycling.

Navigating the path towards sustainability can be complex, but Knauf’s commitment to transparency and accountability, demonstrated through their array of certifications, fosters trust and empowers architects and designers to make truly informed choices about the environmental impact of their projects without compromising on performance or design.
