Sutton Hill House, designed by Free One Building Design, was built for Sam and Selena Hardwick and their three sons in Sutton, New South Wales. Sam, a seventh-generation farmer’s son, and Selena wanted to create a sustainable, off-grid home that honoured their heritage. The design incorporated biophilic principles, with expansive views of the surrounding landscape and a focus on energy efficiency. Reclaimed materials, such as over 14,000 bricks from Sam’s childhood home, were used to add a personal touch and link the house to their family history.

The main challenge was balancing the home’s large size with the need for energy efficiency and comfort. To achieve this, the design prioritized thermal performance and natural light, with a focus on expansive glazing. The ThermalHEART™ series of thermally broken doors and windows were chosen for their energy-efficient properties, allowing the house to remain cool in summer and warm in winter while maximising the connection with the outdoors.

The result is a striking home that blends modern design with historical sentiment. The reclaimed bricks and timber elements respect the past, while the large windows and sliding doors create a seamless connection to the landscape. Sutton Hill House stands as a testament to the Hardwick family’s vision, resilience, and deep respect for their land, creating a timeless and functional home that honours both history and the future.
