Tell us a bit more about yourself, including your background, education and training.

I was born in Sydney and studied Architecture at Sydney University. I have worked for small offices in London and Sydney and started Anthony Gill Architects in 2007.

Why architecture?

I was always interested in Architecture. I love the potential of it.

What does your standard day involve?

We have a few projects on site at the moment and I'll often visit one on the way to our office in Surry Hills. We usually have a morning meeting to discuss projects and deadlines. I am heavily involved in each project, designing, documenting and meeting with Clients, Councils and Builders.

What tools and software do you use?

Our cad program is Vectorworks. We don't use a sophisticated 3d programmes, tending more towards physical models. If we need 3d images, we will photograph the model (often built at a large scale) and use photoshop to create a montage. I think this approach to presenting work has a much more textural feel than a traditional 3d.

What is the biggest challenge you face every day on the job?

Each decision is crucial, while designing or on site. Everything must be drawn and this takes time. Time pressure is the greatest challenge.

What is the favourite part of your job?

On site. I like the building process.

Which project of yours are you most proud of, and why?

Potts Point Apartment - we did something quite unique with a very limited budget, creating a beautiful and rich environment for our family.

With regards to the Potts Point Apartment, did you face any design challenges? If so, how did you overcome them?

Cost, we were forced to build it ourselves to make budget!

The Potts Point apartment involved the re-design of an existing 38 sqm (410sqft), one bedroom apartment in a Harry Seidler building in Sydney.

Any advice for emerging architects or architecture students?

Architecture is hard. You need to be totally committed to the profession from the beginning. Hard work is rewarded.
