Bree Leech has recently joined Dulux’s colour team, bringing extensive experience in colour and trend forecasting and is a graduate of RMIT. Leech has a background as an interior designer in both commercial and residential projects and has over 17 years working within the design industry in various other roles.
Architecture & Design spoke to her about colour trends, the Australian use of colour and a colourful project which has caught her eye.
What are some of the key colour trends in Australia this winter?
Winter traditionally is a time that can be quite dreary and people are often looking for colour that gives their space a feeling of warmth like Dulux Red Terra. The trend this winter is bright and bold colours that really lift and energise a space and the effect is a perfect antidote to the cold outside.
What are some of the colour trends overseas at the moment?
There are a few global trends happening that are already appearing here in Australia. Layering various tones of blue in a space is a strong trend and works well with a backdrop like Dulux Blue Dude. Grey's also looks to be a universal neutral trend and looks great when teamed with another key colour trend - citrus hues.
Do you think Australians use colour well inside the home and office?
I think what Australians do well is get the balance right - where to be subtle, where to be bold and bright and when to mix it up. Over the years I've noticed that Australians have become more confident with colour and with a little inspiration can create amazing spaces.
What are some ways architects could use colour better?
Overall I think Australian architects work well with colour. Its really about looking at the project as a whole and having colour in mind during the conceptual process.
What is a project that stands out as using colour really well?
The Royal Children's Hospital is such a gorgeous example of colour used well in architecture. The colours were drawn from the building’s surroundings and also relate to the interior of the project, which I think is really important.

What is one of the best advice you have ever received in your career?
I think the best advice I've been given is to listen - to your client, customer or whoever you are trying to communicate an idea to. Often a design solution is right there in what they are saying and just needs to be realised by the designer.
What is the one thing you would like architects to think about next time they are designing a project, in terms of colour?
When designing a project colour should be a consideration throughout the process and not just towards the end. This way colour can be used to strengthen a design and be an integral part of it.
