1. HOON

‘Play’ is a series of children’s furniture designed by Jesper K. Thomsen and produced by Normann Copenhagen as part of a larger Danish Modern collection. The series is inspired by the “slapped-together” look of a child’s soapbox car, and Thomsen’s version is seen here. The various pieces demonstrate a humoristic approach, with a home-made aesthetic.

The series features a bench, table, chair, easel and the soapbox car, all in the vivid yellow beech seen here. The designer wanted to create a line of children’s furniture that was as playful as a child’s imagination.

Thomsen himself says of his own design philosophy: “To create a solution we have to acknowledge the problem before it makes sense. We like to make design that has a justification … to help people or the environment — at the studio we like to think in strong concepts.”

2. HAVEN

The ‘villa julia’ cardboard playhouse for kids was designed by Javier Mariscal for Magis at the Milan Design Week 2009. The cardboard house allows for a game in five phases, including assembly, personalization, decoration, occupation and disassembly.

The tiny house has an actual opening door, and windows to peer through. The Villa Julia can be personalised internally with furniture, and externally with crayons.

We love the stone-like fireplace and chimney. While not in working order (else the house will burn up), it adds an element of modern chalet style to the little box-like box house.

3. HURL

For golf lover and tidy parent alike, this ‘el baul’ storage box was designed by Javier Mariscal, also for Magic (like the design above, coincidently) as a place to hurl toys, treasures, or hide-and-seek. The rippled surface looks like an elongated golf ball, standing at a relatively grand 91 x 61cm and 56cm high.

The box is $495 at Top3 By Design in Australia, and is part of the Magis Me too! Collection.
