The standard Australian built in oven has a width of 60cm and height of 60cm-90cm. However, there are a number of different oven types – each with their own specific dimensions – so a standard size across the board is difficult to calculate. The different types of ovens include; built in, wall, countertop, microwave, small, medium, large, combined countertop oven and stoves, half size, full size, and more.

The most common oven sizes in Australia are 60cm ovens, 75cm ovens and 90cm ovens. 60cm is a universal size width is the most popular out of the three. However, 75cm and 90cm widths are better suited to family homes and are very common in those contexts.

90cm is a very wide oven size and is usually used by people with a passion for cooking or with large families. Anything over 72cm tall is considered a large capacity oven, while 60cm tall ovens are the standard and 45cm ovens are compact.

Capacity

The most important dimension for an oven is the width. The majority of ovens will have the same height and depth no matter what, so width is the dimension to keep an eye on. (Though some specialized ovens such as the pizza oven may have an unusual height).

Another way to measure the size of an oven is its capacity, which is measured in litres. 35-40 litres is the smallest capacity and will support the cooking efforts of one or two people. 40-70 litres is the standard and will comfortably feed three or four people. 70 litres and more is best suited for large households with 4+ people, big eaters, or the two combined.

Choosing an oven: functions

Besides size, one of the most critical things to consider when choosing an oven is the functions that you will want your oven to have. If you plan on grilling, you should invest in an oven with a separate grill (especially if you tend to cook larger meals). For baking, you will most likely want a fan-oven. Roasting can be done in conventional ovens and fan ovens, but for the best result you should consider opting for a steam oven – this will help to keep your roast meats succulent and can even be used to make delicious, fluffy bread.

Many ovens on the market today are multi-function and will have some combination of the above options. Make sure that you research beforehand to check which functions you will need most and cross-reference this with the oven that you are thinking of buying.
