Online project management tool Podio has shared an interactive graph with Architecture and Design which showcases a range of 'monumental budget busters' from around the world.
Topping the chart of infrastructure projects whose costs have spiralled out of control, in US dollars, is the International Space Station, a $10 billion project that went $68,250,000,000 over budget.
Closer to home, the iconic Sydney Opera House racked up a bill of $70 million over budget - an event that led the Liberal government to question architect Jorn Utzon's cost estimates and designs, and which eventually resulted in Utzon's resignation from the project.
It seems like structures created for Olympic events have a tendency to blow their budgets too, with the Athens, Sochi, Montreal and London Olympic stadiums and infrastructure making the list.
