Academic CV

Martijn deWaal (1972) is an assistant professor in the department of Media Studies, Faculty of Humanities at the University of Amsterdam. His research interests include: 

 

* digital media, urban culture & the public sphere      

* digital media, journalism & the public sphere 

* digital media & storytelling  

His latest book The City as Interface was published in 2014 by NAi010 Publishers of Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

In 2012 Martijn de Waal completed his PhD The City as Interface as part of the New Media, Urban Culture and The Public Sphere research group, headed by prof. R.W. Boomkens at the department of practical philosophy, University of Groningen. Jose van Dijck (University of Amsterdam) also oversaw this research project as a promotor.    

In 2009 he was a visiting scholar at the M.I.T. Center for Future Civic Media, a collaboration between the program in Comparative Media Studies and theMedialab.    

In 1998 he received his MA degree in Cultural Studies as well as an MA degree in Film and Television Studies (with honors) from the University of Amsterdam. He completed part of his studies at the University of California Berkeley.

 

Currently he is also employed as a researcher on Citizen Empowerment at the Amsterdam University of  Applied Sciences.

Outside Academia

Martijn de Waal is the founding director of The Public Matters (www.thepublicmatters.eu) an office for research and strategy on the role of new media in society. 

from 2008-2014 he was a member of the board of the Dutch Media Fund.  

In 2005, with Frank van Vree and Theo van Stegeren, he co-founded DeNieuweReporter.nl , a weblog on the future of journalism. In 2006 they won De Tegel, a national award in journalism, for their effort. 

With Michiel de Lange he also co-founded TheMobileCity.nl , a think tank, research group and conference series on mobile media and urban design.
