The Chinese Government is taking steps to put a stop to unusual architectural designs in the country.
The Chinese State Council has mandated that buildings should be "suitable, economic, green and pleasing to the eye", as opposed to the "oversized, xenocentric, weird" architecture that has been trending in cities.
President Xi Jinping described the ‘weird architecture’ trend as reflecting "a lack of cultural confidence and some city officials' distorted attitudes about political achievements". President Xi had earlier expressed his aversion to this trend in China's booming construction industry.
Examples of ‘weird architecture’ in China include Beijing’s state television headquarters, also referred to as the ‘Big Trousers’ for its pants-like design.
