The inaugural Sydney Design Awards has announced 42 winners across six categories including a range of interior, landscape and architectural awards.

The Martian Embassy by Lava (Laboratory for Visionary Architecture) has won the Interior Design Award in the Public or Institutional category for a design of a creative writing centre for young people. The space includes plywood 'ribs' in reference to Moby Dick and uses red light and sound projections to invoke a 'space rocket and time tunnel'.

Jamie's Italian, Sydney designed by peckvonhartel won the Corporate or Hospitality category for the open plan restaurant of celebrity chef Jamie Oliver and incorporated cantilevered wall lights, steel raised drinking station and black gloss Murano brick tiles. A large grid motif is laid out on the floor using black and white marble floor mosaics and set in a large squared pattern.

Lavender Bay Boatshed by Stephen Collier Architects won the Architecture, Residential, Constructed category for its design which utilises both natural cooling and ventilation throughout with the bathrooms featuring custom designed and built basins from bronze and limestone, and a polished copper bath.

Other winners were Arent&Pyke for the Balmain House submitted into the interior design category and the Bourke Street Cycleway submitted by the City of Sydney which won the Landscape Architecture Award.

Overall there were 200 entrants into the awards which were then voted for by over 3700 votes from industry and the marketplace.
