Relaunched as an annual event in 2012, the Victorian Premier’s Design Awards is calling for nominations, which will close on 20 August 2013.

Entries can be submitted under six categories – architectural design, service design, industrial and product design, communication design, digital design, and design strategy – and will be judged by an international and interstate judging panel led by Victorian designer, Ken Cato.

The Awards aim to celebrate and reward both designers and clients for excellence in the development and use of exemplar design effectively and sustainably.

It also seeks to provide an opportunity for businesses and the community to better understand the role of design in making products and services more functional, efficient and attractive, and ultimately increasing productivity and business outcomes.

The 2012 winner was the Edithvale Seafood Wetlands Discovery Centre designed by Minifie van Schaik Architects.

Perched above wetlands in Melbourne’s south-east, the Centre addresses sustainability through a range of different systems rendering it almost carbon neutral. It is now used to educate the community about the best sustainable practices for managing our wetlands and waterways.
